Educate me.

I look at a clevis versus rubber bushings, heim joints, or tie rods in a suspension system and see binding under any twisting or side loads.

I'm thinking of a road car, not something specialized like an exclusive drag car though there's a lot of twisting motion there too.

What am I missing?

You're not missing anything. A clevis should only be used as a "fixed" attachment, where it's not required to turn, twist or articulate. A hairpin front suspension is a good example...

A four bar, four link or triangulated four link suspension is still limited by geometry... however, heim ends (at all pivot points) allow the links to "twist" individually, which gives more movement and flexibility without bind.

I have more to say, but I have to go out right now. Back later...
