would you swap day jobs from one that you like ok (or so-so) that is 60hours a week for one that is more fun, closer to home, is 45 hours a week but pays 25% less? and the 25% is after the difference in benifits, fuel expenditures, etc.

Truth...

I took a 15,000 dollar a year pay cut to become a cop over being a Service Director at a Dealership and that was in 1989...... so the answer is a profound YES.... :D Never looked back and love this job 1000 times more...

funny how stuff works...

I take my final exam tomorrow for the PT academy. Tonight I met with the chief in a neighboring town and he offered me a full time job. Of course I would be right back to the full time acadamy in aug! The difference in pay after the benifits, fuel etc is $16,800/yr. 4 miles from home vs 45 miles one way now. five 8 hour days vs 5-6 nine hour days (plus 1 hr each way for travel) now. 100% health paid VS $230/week now. Guess I will have to tell the Missus to go work part time somewhere![cl

Where does the pay scale max out..here we max out in 5 years and because i was working as a Part time officer here while I did the Service Director gig, they gave me credit for the years I had worked so I started at the 3 year scale..... When I left the dealership my bonus's where being cut down, they took away the demonstrator I drove and stopped paying for my fuel..... all in all the only figure was the difference in base pay which was 15,000..... plus I got an actual retirement and full medical which I didn't have with the dealership.... sounds to me like you have your mind made up as to which you are going to choose..... My wife never hesitated.... "you do what makes you happy, we'll get by and work thru any pay difference" and we did.... a little talk with the Lord eased my mind .... always seemed to let me know which path to choose.... those gut feelings you get... that's him letting you know what to do.... don't second guess them...Good luck with your decision.... :D

You didn't figure in the cost of wearing out your car, tires etc driving that much every day either.

You can always make more money but, you can't make more time.

Life is about living not about money.

Good luck in your new job.

Yes, because you can always make more money but you can't make more time.

I used to work Underground and in Oil refinerys , as industrial Mechanic , we worked long hours , got paid very good ,but had no time off , hated getting up in the morning to go to work , but when you have a morgage and kids at home you do what you have to , now that the kids are out on there own and doing well , I took a job selling and repairing used boats in a small marina , I get up each morning and can not wait to get to work , for me it was the best thing I did , i will do this job till they put me in the home , money is not everything , this is not a rehersal this is your life , live it .

A lot of things to consider when making a job change, especially with the new lousy economy we are experiencing right now. First of all is job security, how stable is your present job longterm, and what do you think the new job will offer you 5 or 10 years down the road? Another thing to consider is benefits. For years I tried to get into my Son's heads that the amount of your paycheck is only a fraction of your salary.............as we age the benefits like health insurance, retirement programs, etc start to factor in more and more. Now that they are older they get it.

I've changed jobs for various reasons over the years, sometimes for more money, and sometimes for less money. As the guys said, happiness during the time you spend there is VERY important. I've had jobs where I made a lot of money but dreaded going to work every day, that is NO fun.

If you weigh all the options and feel it is the right thing to do, go for it. No rewards in life with taking risks.
