a little history

On February 12, 1871, the territorial legislature created Maricopa County, the sixth one formed, by dividing Yavapai County. The first election for county office was held in 1871, when Tom Barnum was elected the first sheriff. Barnum ran unopposed as the other two candidates, John A. Chenowth and Jim Favorite, had a shootout that ended in Favorite's death and Chenowth withdrawing from the race.[8]

I think instead of election a good duke out would be the best way to decide. lol. A gunfight seems a little extreme though.
Or how about that old trouble shooting contest Chrysler used to put on. They had cars with things wrong and the first team to get theirs running won a schlarship only the candidates would have to get the car running to be elected to office. Can you imagine Obama getting his little pansy arse hands in a greasey engine.lol Sarah could probably pull it off.
