Still trying to wrangle up something old for a daily, probably something off CL. But i realized there is a gap in my knowledge of Chrysler corp vehicles. I know they had overhead valves in the hemi v8s starting in '51 but it seems like the sixes didn't get ohv until later. Anyone familiar with this?

I thought the first Mopar OHV six cylinder offering was the 170 inch version of the slant six in 1960? A Mopar guru may jump in here with better info than that.

I think their first OHV 6 was the slant 6. I've only ever seen the old flatheads and the slant 6s. I don't know what year they switched though[S

Yep, 1960 Valiant Slant Six was the first.
Nothing really wrong with a flathead for a driver, though. A tad weak in a big car, but they get the job done.

I personally like the old flathead better. 230 cube vs. 170 for the slant. Similar hp (100 or so) but more torque in the flathead. Flathead looks cooler, sounds cooler and is very tough and cheap to fix (same for the slant). Slant will be more efficient and probably more speed parts for it though.

Mostly I don't like the OHV solid tappet clickety-clack racket from a slant six. Sound crappy to me. Of course an open exhaust will drown that out...

Slants have adjustable valves. Nobody ever seems to adjust them..010 for intake .020 for exhaust.

Eathdude, I have a 66 valiant signet convert I have owned since 1968, Id sell it along with a 66 cuda parts car. Problem being it would need to have the engine rebuilt and a gas tank. Around 75K on the odometer. Right 1/4 needs fixin, thats why I have the cuda parts car.

Only 2,500 made in 66.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It just seemed odd that the eights would be overhead while the sixes were still flat. WB i prefer a flathead for the reasons you mentioned as well as the simplicity and nostalgia. I would like to find something '56 or earlier. They started getting too big in '57.

:cool:Good idea, find a good flathead.Iworked as a line mechanic for Dodge in the late 60s and early 70s and the slant six engine had alot of problems ,mostly cams and lifters, oil pumps were bad design to and mostly every slant 6 with the oil pump problems slung rods right through the block. The old flaheads are good engines just don"t like to be overheated.

Thanks for the reply C-fire. I am still looking for a good running $100 beater
like the ones i used to buy in the '60's
