I told u recently what amazing skills I have at burning holes in sheet metal & welding them back up... now I've reached a whole new level. While welding in some small patch panels I proceeded to try & weld my fingers! The space I had to hold the small patch from behind was a lil cramped & when I lit 'er up... I'll be darn if my digits didn't get in the way. This left a large burned spot on my fingertip. WOW that hurt! Ok... one stupid mistake... not so bad... right!?!? Er... WRONG. I did the same thing on my other hand just minutes later. WHAT a moron!!!

Note to self: You bought welding gloves for a reason... use 'um!!! D'oh!!!

:D:D:D ROFL......LOL HEHEHEHEHHEHEHE!!!!!! LOL

well duh:D

shhhhhhhhhh........... I've done the same thing.........LOL

Now thats funny........................hehhehehehehhe

Man, you get right to it, don't ya!? Me, I always wait until I finish the weld to burn my fingers on it.

I've tried to use my fingers for many things, but not filler rod......so far...

Should this be in the 'Tech Tips' section?

I have the same issue,But all my welding gloves have burned through from that same thing. I usually like to use the mechanics gloves because they normally fit better. But all the finger tips are now all toast from holding patches. I finally got a new pair of tig gloves.

Burning the finger tips isn't to bad - - while tig welding a exhaust tip on a buddies car - I let off of the foot peddle and layed the torch accross my lap [without thinking] and I tried to shimmy out from under the tail end and caught the tig line on my one foot, which put the torch right in my crotch, started to roll to my side and accidently hit the peddle with my knee while holding on to the bumper and sent a shock to the boys - - - Lesson learned

Is that why they call ya "Lightning"? :D Yowza! I don't even want to think too hard about that one.

A friend of mine showed off his unique grinding skills the other day.... 12 stitches.
be careful

Hmmm, sounds like something I would do. I've managed to get stitches from the strangest things....hit my shin on a C6x8.2# saw horse, sliced hand open when dragging a defective tape measure around and from an oil filter that I had cut open to examine for filings, when I was six I tried riding my bike with my eyes closed...that trip ended in a barb wire fence and on to the ER....wow, I could keep going on for a while, but I think you get the idea of how moronic I truly am.

The worst welding burns I would get were always from the sparks that managed to squeeze their way into my workboots. No point in trying to take the boot off, by the time it's off the spark has finished burning through all the layers of flesh on the top of my foot...just take it like a man (after finishing the bead, run in a circle screaming "OWIE OWIE OWIE OWIE!!" it helps) Those big 460V welders do a lot more damage than the puny 110 & 220's!!

Hey Trip, I used to put up with those little finger burns. But when I run a the hot end of .045 through my finger nail into the meat. I decided no more. Now I use magnets to hold small pieces in place spot weld and remove magnets.
No more burns.

Reminds me of the time I watched a buddy heating an aluminum case to remove a bearing .. of course when he knocked the bearing out it fell on the floor. Being a helpful sort I immediately reached down and picked up the bearing ... I'll leave the rest of the story to your imagination. Took my bud about 1/2 hour to stop laughing at me.

I'll pass on that lesson too!!!

Note to self: DON'T set tig torch *anywhere* near the boys!!!

Yep... did nearly the same thing but ran into the back of a parked car & the license plate split my chin open... 7 stiches! Still have the scar 54 years later!

No more burns.

Yep... gonna have to get some smaller magnets!

I know everyone on here that has done some welding has and will pick up or touch something right after they got done welding it - and then wonder WHY did I do that - " IT'S FN HOT" - but you will do it again!! without thinking until it's to late. I have always liked the situation where you warn someone - IT'S HOT - but they still have to touch it. One thing that I have learned over the yrs. of welding [besides not to lay tig torch in lap or wear jeans that are frayed on the bottom - you look really funny dancing and screaming and trying to get your pants off that are on fire] is to not tuck your shirts in - they may catch on fire, but its harder to get them off when tucked in and that little ball of hot metal gets trapped where it's tucked in. I want to know how that little bit of splatter gets all the way down your long glove just to burn the tip of your finger? without burning anything else ? makes ya go HMMMMMMM?
