Well it's not a hotrod yet but it's a car at least. I used to run several demolition derbys a year so it's only natural that he wants to also. He has paid for this car ($500) all on his own and has did almost all of the work himself. It's a mid 90s Grand Prix that he will be running in a youth derby in a couple weeks. The cars have to be front wheel drive and 6cyl or less. They are also limited to 107" wheel base but they are usually relaxed on the wheel base rule. This one is 108". We still have a lot of work to do but he's made a good start so far.

I had to surprise him to get a pic lol

Little brother has been helping as much as he can also.

Pretty proud of him for sticking with it and not giving up like most kids these days would do.

cool

good memories being made right there[cl

l got fond memories of working on the cars and racing with dad and grampa, good times.

keep up the good work.

Later:cool:

One good lick and that wheelbase problem will be fixed! [ddd

I didn't know they still did demo derbys, haven't heard of one around here in years. Good to see the young'ens carrying on the torch! [cl

It will be safe, it will have a cage and properly set up to be safe. This particular demo is what's called a passenger demo so I will be riding shot gun with him. Been awhile since I've been on the track.

It's good to see a man and his kids doing something together and having a ball doing it.
Cherish it, your kids will be grown and gone before you know it.
Then the grand kids show up and make your day.

How cool is this? I think i will check back in time and see if my Dad would do something like this with me
.....(checking)..........oh xxxx no!

Cherish these memories! Part of my reason for doing my build was so that I could learn as much as I could from my dad while he's still able to do it. The memories you'll make are priceless!

Love demos!! It is such an awesome thing that a kid can do it. Do you move the gas tank inside? And the battery? Also I always liked to tube my tires. One hit and a tire bead gets broke and your done if it's a drive wheel. I also liked to loop the tranny cooler lines at the tranny so you don't loose the tranny fluid when the radiator gets taken out. I lost my first demo from that.

You would be amazed at how much works goes into some of the builds of derby cars. Its actually got out of hand.

The tank and battery are always moved inside the car. We build battery boxes that protect the battery and keep it secure incase of a roll over. As for tires, this derbys rules say passenger car tires only, and no tubes. But most places will allow any tire. I've saw everything from foam filled tires, doubled tires, forklift tires, air plane tires, and ag tires on derby cars.
For tranny coolers most guys mount a oil cooler off of heavy equipment on the inside of the car. The lines are usually hydraulic lines and we run a electric fan on it.

The class my son will be running is for 11-15 year olds. Last year we aloud him to run against the adults the next day and was doing good till his fuel pump burned up.

I'm betting you're gonna hurt more than he does the next day. [ddd

Today's the day!

Well we missed the youth derby due to not getting the car done so we are running the regular mid size derby tonight. I will get a few pics this evening.

Well he got third. We made a bad front end shot that cut the wiring on the starter and we where done for the night. We are going to put a new front bumper on it and take it to Warsaw Indiana in a few weeks.
