I got ripped off once on EBay, but they make you wait so long before you can file a complaint that by then the person was long gone.  Ebay said they would ban them, but big deal, they were already gone, and didn't care.  And my money was gone, too.  After that I started only dealing with sellers who would accept payment through PayPal, but I've not had an occasion to try out PayPal's guarantee.  I use EBay as little as possible, and if I have to, I check out the person's references pretty carefully.  But I realize that I could still get ripped off again, no matter how careful I try to be.
