are most everyone front axles wider then the rear, I bought an unfinshed project, and this is my first shot at one. I'll be running a ford 9" rearend 66 mustang, and the frontend he had was a 63 f100 axle but its a few inches wider likr 8 I think. And I have read where you shouldn't really weld on this type of axle. He had already installed a 4 link in the front, and welded some perches to the axle, but I want this thing to be safe. Can I use this set up with a center spring and bolt on perches or toss itall out and start the frontend over. thanks for the input! Kurt
Oh it a steel square tube frame 3x5 (overkill..lol), 36 chevy truck body, I will try to post a pick or two. thanks

well just a thought, but the mustang rear is one of the narrower of the ford line-up....i might recommend putting a later model truck rear under it (73-86 f-150) it is wider -close match to your front width, and would match bolt patterns-if that matters....
as far as welding to that particular front axle, many have done it and say it works fine --if welded correctly---i'm just not one who has tried it..
i have copied some others ideas about getting a bracket that bolts to a parallel leaf axle to convert it to a transverse spring w/ hairpins roddguy and dogpatch both have good ideas and pic of this set-up....this diagram came from dogpatch1

I agree with Preacher, find a ford truck rear from 60s or 70s truck, right width for the front axle, better brakes and same bolt pattern. The rare small Mustang rear, if it is truley a 9 inch and not a similar looking 8 inch, should sell easily and for twice the cost of a truck rear.

thanks!

thanks for any advice, I also have a set of airbags i might try to incorp, but not sure whic will give the better ride...?

I used a 50 chevy truck front axel on my c-cab and on my t-bucket .both worked really well. heres a pic of the t front ,i'll tack a closer pic if it can help you .
As fare as welding on axels ,i try to avoid it but if i do have to then i will make a wrap around catch bracket that bolts on at least for the first few hundred miles to see if there will be any problems [peice of mind is nice to try to have ,but safety is a must.] the shoks seems to be the fun part to figure out?

Regular springs will ride better than airbags. Bags are very bouncy, esp on big bumps. The main benifit to bags is it allows you to air them down when parked to lower the car. If you aren't interested in that, then springs is the better way to go, from a ride and simplicity standpoint.
