Building my next rod backwards... Got a 4:10 out of a explorer (w discs') got a t5 o/d tranny w tall 1st gear and decent final drive o/d... Aluminun drive shaft and a lightened flywheel...
Now heres the "q"
am wanting a quick winding higher rpm capable motor, without breaking the bank, am thinking sbc 383...
Any opinions would be appreciated

have got a early 283 lying in the garage, but am thinking "no replacement for displacement"

thnx d/b

Stroker motors have more torque, but tend to wind up a little slower than short stroke engines. For example, a 327 tends to wind a little quicker and tighter than a 350. That being said, I stroked my 302 to 331 cubes, and there is absolutely no comparison in the way the two perform. The 331 almost has too much power when I get my foot deep in it, compared to the mildly built 302 being very controlable.

The 383 strokers are super great engines. I just talked with a guy yesterday who ran an 88 Monte Carlo with a 383 and it ran in the 10's. I think you would be very happy with that engine, even though a 283 will wind up a little faster.

Higher rpm

The old engine builders used to de-stroke to get higher rpms, 400 block with 350 crank 302 with 289 or 260 crank, you dont get the big hp #'s of today, but you get high rpm and fast. Today you can build a 383 stroker pretty cheap, with a lightened flywheel and balanced rotating bottom end and get good hp, good and fast rpm's

How about a 400 block with a 302 crank in it? It will turn a lot of RPMs real quick.

knew someone that did that years ago 400 block and 302 dz crank made somewhere around 326 cid. had a roller in it and would turn out of the frame.

I've got a 388" sbc stroker motor w/cast iron bow tie heads that winds up pretty good. Shifts at 6500rpm. Was in my 10.sec Z/28 Camaro full up race car. Definitely has some balls...looking to build a rat to drop it in...[ddd

On another forum a member recently posted that his buddy just built and engine with a 4 inch bore and a 2 inch stroke! He said you should hear that thing wind up. I bet it revs like a 2 stroke. :D Not a lot of torque, though.
