so im at the US marshall car auction a town over checking out the goods the day before the actual auction -- and theres an old econovan or something similar -- a work van -- whatever -- and i ask a "helper" to get the keys and start it up ... so he gets the keys, gets in and gives it a shot to start -- ITS CRANKING OVER JUST FINE -- when another "helper" walks up and says -- " have yall checked the battery -- might be bad"" while it was cranking over...
i was dumbfounded - i had no idea what to do or say - finally after standing there staring at the guy for a sec i just slowly turned and gave the throttle a little push while it was cranking and who would have guessed? it started right up ... why are these people "helping" me? ended up not going to that auction... but i had to share the little story with someone whod understand.

I can't even count the times i've heard that on TV. The car will be cranking over but won't start and the first thing the idiot "actor" says is "The battery is bad. jump start it". Idiots.

I say that alot. When someone is cranking and it won't start. "Maybe the battery is dead, that's what was wrong with my car when it wouldn't start" And I try to say it as serious as I can.

alot of people out there are just not "intelligent" about cars.....

really, if its cranking over and hasn't started, it's not the battery--probably the blinker fluid is low, or the muffler bearing is dry -- but its not the battery:rolleyes:[S:D:D

seriously i hate morons giving out auto advice...;)

i always like working on volkswagens... "oh wel there's your problem right there, the motors in the wrong end of the car.."

Shoot.........I thought it was out of water! Must have a lot of torque to throw the engine all the way to the back like that.[ddev

That's the kind of misinformation i'm talking about. Everyone knows you don't run water in a VW. You need a mixture of transmission fluid and anti freeze. Otherwise you'll rust the muffler bearings and pollute the blinker fluid.

I used to get these calls at work all the time, "My boat won't start." So I ask them if they mean it won't crank or won't fire. 50% of them either didn't understand what I was asking, or didn't know. Sometimes the guy would have to put his Wife on and she had a better understanding of the problem than he did.
