Around here if something isn't scared of you. it might have rabies.

To be honest, I was a kind of scared because I've never seen one that wasn't running away. He was just nosing around looking for food. Then as he walked by me I pulled my leg up over my bike so the bike would be between us. He took off pretty fast from the motion of my dismount.

Distemper is a common ailment with foxes too. I killed one several years ago that I thought was rabid and the DNR said it was Distemper. At that time they had recorded several recent cases including one case where a red fox had come onto some folks porch and laid down and wouldn't leave. Hopefully this guy was just hungry.

I've had something similar happen to me when I was farming. I was laying on my back working on a bob truck in a field, doing fiddly slow work on the brake system, when a fox came under the truck with me! I wasn't moving enough to worry him, and he was checking me out. He split quick when I yelled and banged the wrenches around. When he came under there with me I thought 'rabid' and was pretty alarmed, but I think he was just curious. Weird little critters.

They do learn pretty fast if humans are a threat or not. I've seem them while bowhunting and they can be very cautious and elusive. I've seen them in a local forrest preserve acting almost tame, with little concern for humans.

I was walking in a local forrest preserve with my Catahoula and we walked right up on one that was just sunning himself upwind on the trail. Fortunately for him my dog was on lead. I don't think the poor little guy stopped running until he got to the next county after he saw how close we got to him. :)
