for the too manyth time
i saw a guy at a loss because he spent all the time and money to build a rod
and now cant drive it on the streets legally because he didnt do his homework first.
before you touch a wrench
have a clear plan on how it is going to be legal
in my case i had a three ring binder with a receipt for every piece of steel and nut or bolt on one page
and on the facing page a photograph of the part
i even had the title from the donor vehicle that i got the engine and tranny from.
the lady at the dmv told me she wished everybody did it like that
it took me 30 minutes and i drove that car home
i even got to pick where i wanted my VIN plate attached to the frame.
so please
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Right on X2^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Had a title before I ever turned a wrench on all mine.

my wife says
i feel a little bit sorry for them because it would be a heartbreaker
but on the other hand
these are grown men that for some reason this never even crosses their mind?
i kinda feel the same way

if this post can keep even one rodder from making this heartbreaking and easily avoided mistake
it is dang sure worth typing!

we now return you to your regularly scheduled program*

Great post Billy, I had my frame build before the hammer hit me in the head and said you better check into this first. Turns out it's a piece of cake up here in Saskatchewan Can.[cl

Luckily in Alberta they just check if it was in the system. Chances are it wasn't, and if it wasn't you just need an out of province inspection. Much easier for us hot rod guys than the title system.

Good advice Billy.

I heard a story (probably happened a lot) about a guy who fixed up something like a Chevelle, had boocoo $$$ into it, the went to get a title. Long story short, the guy who held the title showed up with a slide back and took the car away.
I did check before I started my car and was told the process, checked back 4 years later and that process no longer existed. The process I did use required the car to be mostly finished before they would inspect it and affix a state issued VIN plate.

It happened to me this summer. Bought a '47 IH pickup 4th of July weekend with the plan to have it resurrected in time for the rat rod show Labor Day Weekend. The first thing I did was go to DMV with the proper paperwork. It was a piece of cake! I was there 10 minutes and walked out with a set of plates with tabs on them. They said my title would be to me in 6-8 weeks.[cl[cl I was shocked at how easy it was because I have always heard how tough MN was to get this type of titling done. I made the goal of driving the old girl to the show! A few days after the show I got a fairly snotty letter from the higher ups in DMV telling me that they could not issue me a title because the vehicle was "abandoned" and the landowner who I bought it from was not allowed by law to sell it to me. What a load of crap! So, I have since jumped through a few more of their hoops and waiting for word back.[P[P Sucks!

Billy, what state were you in when got your title? NM ? Also,I wonder which state is the most builder friendly state? I heard LA was pretty good.

Yep, I'm in the process of getting the paperwork straightened out on a '54 Customline I just picked up. I won't even turn a wrench until I have the title and all proper paperwork in my grubby little hands. California has one of the worst DMV systems in the country! I knew a guy that built a Ranger pickup and had invested a ton of cash, using all the best parts money could buy. Long story short, he couldn't get it titled. Wound up parting out the truck!

I worry about this a little. I have called the OR DMV several times and got different stories. I have read the rules several times and hope my interpretation of them is the same as the person at the DMV that gets to make the final call. Many of my parts came from cars that I resold and the titles went with them. DMV told me to do it this way. I am fairly confident that with a bit of paperwork, a license plate and a lot of charm, I will get through it all OK. :D But I still worry a little. I think I will take it down for inspection on a nasty rainy day so they won't want to look too hard at it.

I think the next project will get titled before I start. Wish me luck.
