Ok, I have to do something with this 71 Coupe DeVille. I went partners with another guy and he is embroiled in a divorce settlement and needs his money. I have made several runs at selling it, including listing it twice on ebay. Once I got the opening bid of 2495 but the bidder backed out. The second time I did reserve and it made a max of $2001, not quite there, especially after ebay gets $200.
Sooo... my question to all of you is what do you think the 472/TH400 would be worth on the market in your area. Not so much what YOU would pay because I know half of you are scrounging cheapskates like me. Car has just shy of 54,000 miles.

I'd get my $1200 out of him and let him sell it or do whatever he wants with it. He is the one causing the issue. Or offer him $500 for his interest in it.

I'm just like that... :D

worth of an item

The worth of an item is what you can get at the time you want to sell it. Worth is the agreed price between buyer and seller.

The value might be more. Very few if anyone get the value of an item at sale time.

Worth and value is hard for others place upon an item with out eyeballing it. Probable your worth and value are higher than potential buyers. You sell high, they buy low.

At times someone will sell for whatever their offered just to get rid of it. Your buddy needing $$$$ for divorce is probably up the creek. You may take a loss to get ride of it.

Been thru divorce and wish the best to your buddy.

I have learned if I put anything on eBay, I start it out with what I want out of it. That way I get what I want, eBay gets their cut, everybody's happy. I've never sold a vehicle on eBay though, the two I listed never recieved a bid, but I was contacted by a couple of possible bidders who bought it after the auction was over. I cut them a deal since I didn't have to give eBay a cut.

Right now I think the market is soft. I don't think much is selling, I keep seeing the same cars on Craigslist the past 6 months. Too much uncertainty in the political air....

Ok, guys, that's like zero help. I'm not going to shaft my buddy who is already up to his eyeballs in doodoo, I don't need philosophy on it's worth what some one will pay in that day and that place, or advice on how to use ebay. I just wanted some kind of idea in dollars what an engine like this might be worth.

The guys are just trying to help, but the fact is, it is impossible to tell you what you might get for it just sitting here at our keyboards. What it brings here, where I live, might be different from where you are. For example, engines seem to bring more in the South than up North because engines in the South don't last as long as the bodies, but up North cars rust out and the engines are still fine. Hence, engines are more plentiful up North and cheaper.

If I had to venture a guess, it is not worth a whole lot. Great motors, I had a 472 in my 1970 DeVille and it was a wonderful, powerful motor, but they really bring nothing in the marketplace. I think that $300 figure BobW posted is about right.

Might not be what you want to hear, but you did ask for opinions.

price

around here a running caddy motor is going for about 4OO bucks with the tranny, not to try and be negative, dad also told me stuff is only worth what ya can sell it for.

l see it all the time when hard times hit and money is needed sometimes selling cheap is better than nothing at all.

in my divorce the 66 chevelle, parts and my car hauler went byby way under market value and recently the 1935 5 window chevy coupe was sold cheap to cover some personal things.

as Don stated "Might not be what you want to hear, but you did ask for opinions.

Later:cool:

Ok, that's good. The missing manifolds sell for about $250 and the carb maybe 50, plus mine being low mileage and you can hear it run would put in a decent ballpark. thanks
And Don, I did quantify that I wanted to know what they might be worth in your area which I realize is not my area but it still gives some kind of general idea. I don't know how many different ways I can just ask what something is worth where you all live without you making me look like a third grader who doesn't know those things. I buy and sell for a living and send stuff all over the country and to other countrys, just trying to do a little research on something I don't normally deal in.
If I can make a deal to pay off my friend, I just just keep the big monster for some future project.

if he wants to keep it....

offer him a bill of sale for $ 1 dollar. and write him a receipt. sure you can figure a story

he gives his x a grand total of 50cents.. ..

just a thought ,, heard of it here a couple years back

Text me a few pics Willow. Or a link to some on here. And what is the magic number it takes to buy it whole?

Here in OKLA. I bought two of them 500cid and 472 cid with 400 trans for less than $500 for the pair. I thought it wasw a good deal, so if this helps, there ya go. Start run drive around here probably go for $500-600 just to have spare wheels for the season. Just saying.

Thanks, seems to be the going price, 300-400. Pretty cheap for a good running complete engine. I have been passively watching for a 472/500 for a couple years and never saw any come up around here. The scrap guys would get 300 for one in unknown condition, if any came in. Big cars all got crushed or demo-ed so not many of them left setting around.

These cars are good derby cars but the engines are always replaced by Chevys. And with the thousands of them being ran every year the market for the engines is flooded. This one being a 71 makes it worth a bit more since it's per smog and emissions crap. In my area the car complete would bring around $2000 as a derby car because it's clean. The engine and trans would advertised for around $500 and would probably bring $400.

On a side note, Bonehead is looking for a big block of some sort for a monster truck thing he is building.

I believe with a little smart marketing you could get $500+ ;)

Instead of just listing the engine & trans. Shoot a short video of it running, put the car in reverse & drive(showing the trans works) Maybe even video a compression test.

The difference between $300 & $1000 is the confidence that you are selling a working 472/400 turbo and not just a boat anchor.

Well, I got a bottom dollar offer on the whole car. We'll see if the guy comes through. If I end up cashing out my buddy, I'll probably just park it until I find something cool to drop the engine in, like a 57-60 F100, use the seat in the 56 and ebay what I can.
