To each his own I guess. I do see alot of envy from the shiney boys when the primer/rusty cars get all the attention.
Building and driving, that's what it is about, and I try real hard not to put my joy in someone else's control. I don't want them to have that power over me.

Some old dude, well, older than me anyway, asked if I was gonna paint my car. I pointed down the street, at all the people on their hands and knees cleaning their cars and said, "Do you see me cleaning my car?". You could see the light bulb go off in his head. He said, "That's pretty smart!".

Matter of fact, it was the show where my avatar was taken.

on the maiden voyage with my Apache I arrived at the show late, but found a friend of mine so I parked by him...On the other side was Mr Shiney big bucks. My ugly old truck drew so much attention that Mr shiney had to pull up stakes and move, and made it known that he wasn't happy I parked there. Being the kind soul that I am, I smiled and raised a beer as he left

At the Goodguys event year before last I over heard a guy with a Vette that was complaining about his parking spot because he didn't realize that his spot got all of the afternoon sun and it could fade his paint.

Looks like i'm not alone on this one ,but don't get me wrong,i love paint and love painting things, but its just on my to do list ,not my number one priority.
It must have been a way to get attention fron the girls in the old days to have a shinny red paint job or some thing cause all the old timers around think they cant drive it till it has paint on it ,and they wont either ,even if they have to half ass it to get it done ?
Witch really dosnt bother me all that much but then they want to pic at my stuff even after i paint it .
Its like hea!yoiu got a little run over here or hea! you got a dry spot over here or hea!you got a wave over here .Its like people are never just happy to see some thing took care of or just driven insteed of crushing it?
I just dont get it.people are so compeditve around here,i really get tired of it.

Paint is put on a car to protect it from rusting........If you want your bucket to rust out, don't paint it.......Just don't come down on the people that do. I paint my cars.........It's not expensive paint, and I painted them in my home shop..........Isn't that the point.......Home built rod, done at home by the owner/driver................that's what its about, not whether you do one thing or another, just that you do it yourself.

My current T is about the only hot rod I have ever owned that actually is painted and upholstered, and while I have to admit I like it that way, I honestly can't say it is any more fun than the primered, home upholstered ones I have had in the past.

When I built my '27 roadster I got the frame and running gear painted, but I only tinted the primer with the same purple paint and shot that on the body. The plan was to drive the car and get any bugs out of it, then blow it apart for paint. Well, the car ended up having no bugs and I was having so much fun driving it that I never did get around to painting it.........and I used it almost daily for 7 years. I would tell people at shows that I was going to paint it soon, and lots of them said "don't touch it, it is perfect the way it is." :D

I personally don't like the paint guys being against the non paint guys and vice versa. I also hate the term "gold chainer". Just because one rodder decides to spend a few bucks making his rod prettier, or one rodder decides to make his look a little less so doesn't make either one wrong. It is just a matter of personal preference, period.

For a few years I drove an Anglia in primer. I'd go to Minnesota's biggest show, Back to the Fifties (12,000 cars) and park in the spectator lot. It never occurred to me to enter the show with the Anglia, because it wasn't painted. That was in the 1980's. And, that was then, this is now. The Anglia is still in primer, a fresh coat, and now it is not only acceptable but preferred by many to leave 'em that way. Tmes change, tastes change. With so many people in the hot rod hobby now there's a marvelous variety of build styles to look at and enjoy.
