Rack & pinion

A rack & pinion will not work with a strait axle .. am I correct on this ? the wheels moves in and out on the (A frame) suspension and it does not on the strait axle ....... ...I'm asking because I have a spare rack i'm not using .

I've installed 4 or 5 R&P's on straight axles. I mount it to the axle in place of the tie rod. Need to have a slip joint in the steering shaft. It doesn't move much but binding is not good.
