Well... mice really. Been puttin' the Ranchero through it's paces movin' stuff around etc & today I was haulin' some stuff around for my new girls & looked on the floorboard & there were 2 lil mouses! I'm also havin' some elec work done on my shop & the guy said I should put all the wiring in metal tubes commercial style or the mice & rats will eat it up in no time. Now I'm concerned the same might happen to my Chevelle & was wondering if anyone has any ideas to keep that from happenin'!?

Here are my 4 new girls... bred Brangus all due in the Spring

You can't go wrong with Brangus is the pasture! Good looking set of heifers.
Or are they cows?

As for the mices, I'll have to agree with the hungry cats. If you can stand cats.

I personally hate cats as bad as mice so we keep poison out for the mice and let the dogs take care of the stray cats. Works for me.

Agreed! Its the ONLY reason we have a cat. They are the best mousetrap money can buy! And once in a while they act like zombie cats :D[cl[ddd

I feed the feral cats around my shop and in the 3 years they have been coming around I haven't seen a mouse, rat, snake or lizard. They are very good at keeping the vermin population at zero. :D

If there is grain around, there aren't enough cats that survive the raccoons and coyotes to kill all the mice. At least that's how it was on my Dads farm.

Mothballs and dryer sheets.

I'm definitely gonna try that!

I'll probably try a combo of all the above. We do have lots of coyotes, they woke me up at 5:30am the other nite. 2 groups of them howling like crazy! Guess I better get my long rifle sighted in! [ddd Deer season right around the corner & there's plenty of them too! I love deer chili!!! [dr

The mothballs and dryer sheets have worked good for wintering a vehicle, but a cat probably works best for a shop. Any farm needs a few stray cats anyhow.

Cats are free and you can't have too many on a farm. Dogs will guard livestock but 'coons, 'yotes, wolves, porcupines and badgers tend to upset the harmony. (Pistol on one hip, sawed-off on the other, rifle on your back.)

I've never been to Texas or Iowa but it sounds like the rural life is more or less the same, weather aside.

For reasons unknown, this comes to mind...

Here at the compound (dysfunction junction) we have 4-5 barn cats and I have 2 in my house, plus my sister has 2 dogs that sleep outside. Zero mice and most other pests but trying to keep chickens is a chore. Coon and fox figure out the dogs and get past them for chickens. The fox will come right in broad daylight.

A couple years ago I was live trapping the coons. My sis wouldn't let me kill 'em so I had to take them way out and turn them loose. After 3-4 I got tired of the drive so I just went about a mile down the road and into the neighbor's hayfield. I decided I had to do something to this coon so I painted him orange with some surveyors paint. He made a bee-line for the river, beat me back to the road and ran right across in front of a motorcycle and a car.

I didn't know Racoons would harm cats. We used to get Racoons and cats show up at our shop for dinner and they would eat out of the same bowls. But I did see Mama Cat tear after one Racoon when he got too close to one of her kittens one time and he took off in fear. :)

Don's right about the pest population down when you have a few cats. Had 4 outside cats at my last house, never had a mouse inside in 13 years! WHEN I was a kid my buddy had a large German Shepherd that was as mean as a snake . He also had a racoon and the coon would tear that dog a new one when ever he got the urge!:D I would definately put all my wiring in conduit...Mice seem to eat everything!

If you have hedge trees in your area the hedge balls are good deterrent as well. Just toss em around inside your out buildings.

I've used the "Bounce" dryer sheets over many winters now and it sure seems to keep the rats and mice at bay. I haven't had a problem in several years. -EZ
