Busted and Rusted on Route 66
I just rebuilt a ford F1 steering box for my 34 Coupe. I replaced the bushings, bearings, races, worm gear and sector gear. Basically everything inside is brand new.
I adjusted the steering shaft and bearings by adding/removing gaskets until there was no play or bind. So that felt good. Then I inserted the sector shaft. The bushings were honed to fit the shaft and felt fine. I then put it all together and adjusted the sector shaft adjustment screw all the way out. It was pretty tight centered but felt OK at the each end of the steering limit.
If I srewed the adjuter in it wouldn't turn at all.
It this common on a rebuilt box. It's just tight right now and needs to wear in a little? Am I worrying about nothing and just not used to a non-worn out box?
