Please excuse my ignorance but I am not sure what I am looking at here. I was going to put on a machanical fp to see if the engine I have even runs.

There was a block off plate, I took it off and found a rod going up through the block. I presume this was put here when an electric fp was used. I also presume I can take take off the other plate shown here and remove the rod and use a mechanical pump. Is this so? If not let me know what to, or not to do.

Thanks.

Fuel pump

CD,
You can see where the mechanical pump went where the 2 bolts were removed. That rod needs to be pushed back up. I take the bolt I circled out & use a longer one... push the rod back up... put in the longer bolt (which holds it in place)... put fuel pump on then take longer bolt out. That lets the rod slide on to the pump (the rod runs the pump) & then replace the original bolt. Done! Also, you might wanna take that plate off & see if there is any gunk &/or shavings down in that cavity... gunk happens! :)

The rod is the drive pin for the fuel pump. It wont work without it. It can be a pain to keep it in the up position while you install the pump. There is a bolt hole on most blocks on the front of the block that you con thread a bolt into to hold the rod up while you bolt the pump up. Otherwise you can unbolt the plate, take the rod out and coat the top end with bearing grease to hold it up, then bolt the plate and pump on.:D

Thanks Guys,

For some reason I was thinking the fuel pump ran directly off of the cam shaft. One of those duh, deals, the cam is up much higher in the block. Its probably been 35 yrs. since I replace an sbc pump. The first thing to go is the memory, I can't remember what the second thing is.

CD,
Me too but I had to replace the FP on the old Daytripper about year ago & my buddy turned me on to the longer bolt trick.

Just don't forget to take the long bolt out when you're finished so your fuel pump rod isn't locked up when you try to start the car.
