i just thought i would share this with you guys. i bought a 4'x4' 18ga sheet for $42 something. they gave me a price of $70 something for a 4x8' sheet. they didnt have any 4'x8' so the hunt began. i called another place and they told me for a 4'x8' 20ga would be $105.

my buddy was with me and told me about this heating and air place. i called them and they gave me a price for a 4'x10' 20ga gal sheet was $35, needless to say i got 2 sheets.

i dont think there anything wrong with using galvanize sheets is there? for the money they cost, rust protection. it should be a win win right? i figured most in not all of us could find a heating and air supply house local.

what do you guys pay for metal in your area?

I paid $80 for a 4x8 piece of 18 ga recently. That seemed like a bunch to me--I'm in Arkansas, and stuff here is usually pretty cheep. I've been looking for some of the 'killed' metal to form fenders, but so far, no one here's even heard of it.

The down side of the galvinized metal is that Zink fumes are toxic when you weld it. You'll need to grind the zink off good before you work it. I have developed lung issues over the years--(probably from doing stuff like that) and I'd recommend to not use it.

Don't weld galvanized. Once you have been sick from it you stay away.

As far as price goes 4x8 sheet of 16 gauge just cost me $75.00 (delivered)

Welding galvanized = VERY toxic fumes. You can't grind it off either - Not only does it not remove the zinc entirely from the substrate, it also propels the dust into the air where it makes it's way into your lungs. There is a reason it is $35 and at a HVAC supply house - that's what it is meant for. Unless you have some ducting to cut & bend then I would suggest returning it and getting yourself some regular cold rolled mild steel.

+1 on that. I have welded galv. stuff , but only when I had to. Even when you think you have it off, it still pops and sputters while welding without even mentioning the fumes. You will wind up with a better job using mild steel.

ive welded galv before myself, i did at at a place i worked at for a couple of months. if you feel sick to your stomach drink milk.

im going to use it for floor pans. some of it will not even get welded down because im going to use it to get to my battery and brake booster, kinda like an acess pannel. the tranny tunnel will also be removable. i think there called dzus fasteners. i got 20 of them today but didnt look at the name lol.

Yeah, the galv stuff is made for fab work and using shears and a break. Not saying it can't be welded , but I am certain that milk won't cure what gets into your lungs. Sounds like you have it under control though. Good luck with it, and post some photos when you can
