Seriously thinking about making the L...O...N...G drive (1800 miles each way!) to the Bonneville salt flats for Speed Week this year.

Who else is going?

What's it like camping on the salt at "the bend in the road"?

I could drive my Toyota out there for about 1/4 of what it would take to drive the 48...and have air conditioning. ......But that wouldn't make me one of the cool kids.

Flew out there 2 years ago and it was a blast! Will definatley make the trip again in the rod when it is done. The camping was pretty primitive looking. We stayed in windover utah. Don't stay there. Stay in windover nevada. Basically the same town but alot nicer for some reason. If you can go I would highly recommend it. Hopefully I'll be ready for next year!

The more I think about it, I will probably be driving the toyota out there this year. I can come closer to affording $250 in gas better than $1,000. ....means I don't have to cut out all of the other car shows I want to go to.

Plus the toyota will handle the salt a lot better than the old truck. Everything is protected by a nice coat of paint....not so much with the old truck.

...and the toyota has a radio. 50 hours of driving without tunes may drive me mad.

Started building a bike rack for the toyota so that we can have bikes to ride from the spectator parking area through the pits and to the starting line.

This is probably the first toyota echo with a reciever hitch [;)

Hey Flipper,

The camping at the Bend In The Road is primitive but they do have porta potties. We stayed out there a couple years ago and it really wasn't that bad. We drove up to the truck stop and took showers each day. I think it was $5.00 for a shower. When we were there they had a couple car shows in the evening and one night the Ozzie's had paid for a live band.

Here is what the camping looked like. There were a lot of people in tents camped around the area. The price is right, "FREE".

This is one of the car shows they had. It was sponsored by Hop Up magazine. They provided hot dogs and drinks. It was a lot of fun.

One of the fun things we did was get up and watch the cars driving out to the salt.

Take lots of sun block and put it where you would never expect to get sun burnt, such as up your pants legs if your wearing shorts. Take good sun glasses. I wore two pairs one normal pair and one that went over the top and wrapped around the sides.
