I have a '30 4 piece hood and the pin/rod in the center hinge is some what exposed. Amazingly it isn't rusted at all. I'm certain that it will rust now that it's been taken apart, any sugestions on how to keep that from happening? I think paint will just come off once it's assembled because the fit is still snug.

I probably won't run the hood... but just in case.

If you paint it after its assembled the paint won't be in the areas where the hinge rotates, but on the spaces between the loops that hold everything together, so I would think that it wouldn't chip the paint too much, and if you keep the hinge lubed good, ( with dry graphite) it should be fine,,

I read an aritcle a little while ago that talked about somethign similar (about door hinges). May be a bit of work, but if you round off the edges of the hinge hoops (yes i know on a hood there are alot) before its assembled and painted, that the paint gets into gap a little more and resists chipping as easily as a hard 90 degree corner would. If that makes any sense to you at all...

I'll just throw this out there, stainless steel rod? In my past with model A, rust stain was more likely on the underside of hood, water runs downhill, (was not bad)

not uncommon for a gearhead from Oregon or washington to come up with the stanless rod,, we know what moisture is in these parts ,, don't we got rust?? especally this year,, :D

A stainless rod is a good idea. The original rod fits so well though I hate to switch it. The car's been in a barn out of the weather for a long time, but I still expected some rust. There isn't any, except on the ends (very little). The car has been in Michigan it's whole life and I know condesation was present in my barn during the spring.

I like the idea of putting a small radius on the hinge holes. This makes sense... more surface area for paint and no sharp corners to chip.

I've been looking at a product called Shark Hide. Anyone using it?

I have no experience with the Shark Hide, but I saw them use it on Two Guys Garage. Seemed like a interesting product, real easy to apply and if it does what the sales rep said it would it sounds like a good product.

As far as the radious on the hinges I meant the outside of the hinge circle... If that didnt come accross properly.

why not just grease or never sieze the holes. then slide the rod in. or you could use a brass rod.
