I was at the pick and pull salvage yard today to get a few things and see what else might be available. There was a 67 Chevy van and 66 Chevy truck the steering boxes looked to be in good shape.

Do you think they would work on a side steer set up? The van one had a side mounted pitman arm and might need to be reversed and truck one was on the bottom but looked like it could be turned. For $30 I hope they would better than paying $200-$300 for a Vega or Corvair. Any thoughts!

I remember at one time they were using some Dodge van box in T buckets, but not sure about the years or models. If the Chevy box has a mounting flange that looks adaptable and the arm pointed in the direction you need, then I think you could make it work.

If the steering box is in front of the axle in the van you probably will need to position the arm the other direction so it steers in the right direction when you turn the wheel.

My October, 1977 edition of Street Rodder magazine shows Chevy Van steering boxes as being a good choice for down the side drag link set ups. They say around a 1964 box. I don't know if a 1967 is the same. If a '67 Chevy Van has a beam axle and the box behind the axle it should work.

The van has a beam axle but the box is in front. So I think its backwards.
The PU is a front steer so, I think that may be backwards also. I think I need a beam axle box that's in the rear or a rear steer independent box.

Some other options, Type 1 (early) VW bus, Econoline van, '67 and earlier. I've got a '39 Chevy pickup box in my '35 International. It's a worm and sector box so the steering effort is a little high. In fact, I'm going to put a Ross aluminum box (probably from a fork lift) in in the spring.
