The steering shaft i am using is 10 inches to short. What is the best way to cut it and make it longer?

I was going to use a peice of solid bar i have put it inside the 2 parts of steering tube about 2 inches on each end weld the ends of the tube up with 4 rosets on each tube. grind it smooth for the bearsing to fit over.

All your thoughts and ideas are welcome. The shaft area that is being cut is just round not DD tube. There is not enough area in the DD part.

That sounds okay to me as long as the welds are GOOD! I would say that since you are welding thicker solid bar to thinner tubing to make sure that there is sufficient penetration in the bar. Am I uderstanding you correctly? You are going to weld around the diameter of the bar and execute rosette welds on each side of the splice? If so, I think you will be okay.

We call them plug welds around here, it will be plenty strong. I have a solid shaft in mine, but I know why the manufacturers use colapsable steering shafts, and wonder if I should go that route.
