I am going to weld plates on the sides of my kick up to strengthen that area.
Should I use the same thickness as my frame walls for the plate or something different?
My frame is 2"X4" tube 3/16" wall.
Thanks,
BB

While it never hurts to be extra sure of the strength of your frame, if I used 3/16" tubing, I would be satisfied v-grooving and welding it and not overplating the welds. That is, if you are confident in your welding. 1/8" or 3/16" for overplating will be sufficient if you overplate. Just my opinion, others may vary.:D

I agree with bobW! I tend to overkill on that stuff, but usually just find some plate laying around and go for it. I use alot of 10 gauge steel in my other endevors, so plenty of that around. (10 gauge is a little less than 3/16, but thicker than 1/8th)

I think these fit into the category of " oh, what the h***, I might as well put some bracing on there while I'm at it." As mentioned, if the welds are done right they should be actually stronger than the parent metal itself, so you shouldn't need any extra support. However, we hot rodders tend to overbuild stuff (I know we do), so if it makes you feel better, go for it.

Don't need to be anything elaborate, even a round plate about 2 inches in diameter would work, placed directly over the joint and fully welded around the circumferance.

Thanks Don.
I hear everyone about the welds being strong enough, but I always seem to get concerned with frame items because of my 3 year old riding with me. I guess when it comes to structure stuff I lean on the "over built" side.

I think he means you'll create a weak spot from all the welding and grinding... OOOOORRR It won't allow the frame the flex right and create a stress point somewhere else and crack...

I know what you're sayin bout overdoing it... When I do step notches on trucks for air ride I do square 12g plates over my v cut welds... I do it just to be on the same side... Minitrucks take heavy abuse from draggin at 65+ mph down the interstate... lol So a lil reinforcement can't hurt...
