I have a question on shocks. On my 47, i have a ford 9" and leaf springs but my frame sit's about a 1/4" off of the axle. I think i want to build some shock supports and lift the back up just a touch. How much space did you leave between your frame and your axle? If you have any pictures of your set up, i would love to see them if that's okay? I too, am going to put shocks on the front end, which i have a speedway front end, but no shock there either. Pics of your front ends would be kick ass too.

Um, another quick question, what least expensive shock did you buy to run your rod? Currently there is no way that i can re use the 47's shocks on the front or rear. Did you have a way to measure for the shock you used?

Doug what you need to think about is jounce and rebound. Jounce is when your tires are moving up and rebound is when your tires are moving down away from your fenders, like in basketball when you get the ball off the backboard. Right now, your axle setup isn't drivable as you probably know, cause it's gonna be bangin' the frame. An average passenger car probably has about 4" bofore it hits the rubber jounce blocks (bout 2" tall). Maybe you don't need quite that much. You might get away with 4" total, but you still might wanna mount up some kind of rubber block.

You want the shock mounted about in the middle of it's travel and it's gotta be long enough to extend the length of your suspension travel and more importantly be able to compress as much as your suspension can compress. Otherwise you will destroy those shocks.

Hope that helps. Maybe some other guys can chime in with actual measurements.
 
Thanks for the quick reply, i really appreciate that. I was looking around and found a c notch image. I am thinking on the rear, i will try the c notch and see if i can get enough space from that process. I attached an image of the c notch type i am looking at doing.

Well, with 10 leafs and not much of a bed, I doubt you'll have much axle travel! Might wanna think about removing a couple or 3 from those leaf packs too.
 
Thanks for the reply's. Hey sam, how many leafs would you remove? Would you just take them from the center? Or from the bottom up.....
 
I would take at least 3 out, alternating as you go up from the bottom. Leave the bottom one, take out the next, leave the 3rd, take out the next, etc.

If you want to lift the back up put the axle back under the spring where it came from that will lift the back up and give you plenty of clearance Lots of reputable hot rod parts stores to get good shocks from .For cheap ones go to Pep Boys . shocks can not be used to raise a vehicle up . They are used to dampen bumps in the road .
