The California Kid
There was an article in the Readers Digest in the 70's about an old man who had just buried his wife. He had cancer and wasn't expected to live beyond a year. While driving home from the cemetery, he did something he had never done before. He picked up some hippies that were hitchhiking. As he drove, one of the hippies said, "Hey man, why do you look so down?". The old man got angry, but calmly said, "I just buried my wife and I have cancer". The hippie said, "You need to change your diet". The hippies then proceeded to explain a healthy diet. The old man thought, you ain't doctor, what do you know.
A few days later, the old man received a bunch of pamphlets in the mail from the hippies. It explained the benefits of a brown rice diet. The old man was going to throw the pamphlets away but thought, "What have I got to lose?". He followed the advise and within 6 months, felt better if not great. He went back to the doctors that told him he had only a year to live. After a thorough examination, they could find no cancer.
My mother kept that article for years, along with the diet. However, when she sold the house and moved in with my sister, she lost it.
Just thought I would let everyone hear the story in case they have old Readers Digests lying around or would like to contact Readers Digest for the article. I believe he wrote a book, but I don't know his name.
