In this scary and uncertain age of terrorism, many people have been expressing the desire to go back to "better times" when America didn't worry about the Taliban, hijacked airplanes, Anthrax, or Michael Jackson. A large number of people hail the mid 1950's as the "glory days" of the United States, a time when the populace was only concerned with trivial things such as what flavor ice cream to choose at the local malt shop, who to ask to the highschool prom, how to repress those bothersome negroes, and ways to shield your eyes when an atom bomb fell on your head
in these uncertain times, one must think of others' viewpoints
and always remember that a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

Ah, yes, McCarthyism. I was too young then so I don't miss it much.
It's ironic how most people remember the best and forget the rest. My mom always pined for the good old days but the truth was, they worked like borrowed mules just to get by.

... they worked like borrowed mules just to get by.

I STILL do! :D

I lived through 8 months of the 50's. I don't remember it, I probably slept through most of it.[ddd
I don't remember too much about the 60's, either. I was too busy playing. War and killings were just things on TV, not real to me. When the 70's came rolling in, things started to matter more, I didn't want to go to a jungle country and die. I was making $20 a yard cutting grass, I had plans for my money! Luckily, things quieted down, so all I had to worry about was what kind of car I was going to get, and what I was going to do to it.

At the end of the 70's, 77 to be exact, I left childhood and graduated high school and went out into the real world. Been working my butt off ever since.

Good old days? Every day above ground is a good old day.[cl Especially when you realize that you have more days behind you than you do ahead of you. Sure there are things in the past that were better, but not everything. Make the best of every day, and you'll always be in the good old days.:D

Hi Everyone

I agree with all you guys...I am firm believer that post war era (after 1945) until probably 1963 when JFK was killed was a darn good time to live. People did work like dogs but it did seem a lot simpler life too...smaller towns...quieter times too...no hippies yet..no womens lib yet either....the family unit was still in place...families stayed together too...the family farm was still strong too...church was still a big thing then too...

Wish I could back to that time again...just to see how it really was...not looking thru "rose colored" glasses like we do now...

Thanks for getting me to thinking again....

Life hasn't changed all that much for a most men. Shower, shave, trudge off to 8 hours of work, head home, mow the lawn, etc. drink a beer and watch the tube a bit before bed. Repeat.

Women, they got burned - used to spend all day trying to keep up the home, but all the new gadgets and packaged foods cut that time down to nothing so the women libbers decided women needed to go get jobs too - doh!

my gay buddy was griping about equality a while back.
he is mad because militant gays want to have what he considers the 2 worst institutions.
marriage and the military!

Reminds me

Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official, 'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'

The Chief nodded in agreement.

The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?'

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When white man find this land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.'

Then the chief leaned back and smiled.

'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'

Good days.

You know, that's why we love hotrods. They take us back to a simpler time.....rock and roll....loud pipes....cruisin.....chicks. Go to a show and for one day, at least, I'm back there. That's the reason I do it anyway.:D
