most of the classic truck sites carry them...

Does anyone know where I can get one of the old volt-a-drops that JC Whitney and the like used to sell? Thanks Rich

for converting older instrumentation to 12 volts.... I would check them...might even check at the old radio shack as well.... probably won't be shown for use in your application but they have something that would work...

You can use a 7806 Integrated circuit that regulates 12v to 6v. Or Radio Shack sells a 7805 that reduces 12v to 5v. (which will make the gauges read a bit low) That and a diode or a couple resistors and you can boost it back to 6v.

Do a search '12v to 6v 7806'.

The IC needs to be mounted on a heat sync of some type.

worry

don't worry about it, lots of old threads get re-read and posted on.

ignore it and feel free to post where ever you feel like, might help others as it has helped me.

a lot of them still have good info, like this one.

l have been looking for a voltage drop to run my 6-V heaters in my rods and now l know rat shack or VW sites may have them.:D

Later

Now it is a 2 year old thread plus some

When I was into Dodge Sweptline trucks I brewed this up because the internal voltage regulator (5 volts) would fail and cook the gas and temp gauges. The factory VR is a thermal switch breaker point style deal and they stick causing 12v to go to the gauges.

You could use a 7806T instead of a 7805T and have 6v coming out of it.

This is fine for low amperage stuff like gauges or maybe a radio but I don't think it could handle a heater motor or wipers.
