A Chinese airliner had to touch down in Germany due to low fuel. It was an unscheduled stop. Upon inspection by the Germany ground crew who are quite picky about maintenance, the airliner was grounded. Lucky passengers.

Apparently, the fan blades on jet engines are supposed to be perfectly smooth. However, the fan blades on the #1 engine caused a vibration. So instead of replace the engine, it was turned off. To keep the fan from turning during flight and causing a vibration, the enterprising ground crew in China used seatbelts to hold the fan. The subsequent drag of the disabled engine caused the airliner to use too much fuel.

The German ground crew inspected the other engines and found and 2 more in need of replacement.

Note to self: Don't fly on Chinese planes.

With respect to gassersgarage, I've seen this before. One of those viral things, it's been around for a few years. Notice the dates, the same pics and related BS in the links below.

All that said, many airlines have poor reputations and practices when it comes to maintenance and safety. (I believe Air China is one of them).

Discovery Canada airs a series called "Mayday". Stories of mishaps, mistakes and disasters from all over the world.

I apologize for hijacking the thread, gasser. I hate flying like the plague, so I take interest in these stories.

The show 'Seconds from Disaster' used to cover a lot of air crashes. It would step through the time overview of what occurred and then go back through the time line and explain what went wrong and why.
