Did a quick search on FTE. Here's a quote that might help ya:

Before you start any modification on any of these motors, consider what you want as an end product. If you must have port fuel injection, start with a 351W engine. If you want a stump puller start with a 351M/400 (or 460). If you want a screaming 12 second 8000 RPM muscle car start with a 351C.

I'd prolly go the 351w carb or 400 route. If I found a 460, I'd go that way. Cubes is cubes. Doubt the 2x4 or 4x4 400 makes a difference unless you need the trans and the T-case is married.

I don't think the 400 has much of a aftermarket, but you probably can get some decent HP out of it by just removing all the emission drain. If you know Ford, might as well go with one. And uh, that Lincoln ain't no lil' Mustang. ;)

I didn't forget the 300-6, i meant to leave it out, the lincoln im putting the engine into ha a v12, so i didnt want to put in half of what it had, so i dont want a 6 cylinder engine

Well, in truth, everything on your list is boring except the Northstar and it's a complicated drivetrain. I know you want to take a long trip without issues but what about a nice 312? Or an FE? 326/371 Olds? Nailhead? 500 Caddy?
I guess I always like to see an interesting engine in an interesting car. 302,351,400 Ford, 360 mopars, are not very interesting. (Although I myself have a 260 Ford engine in my rod)
Maybe keep it a V12 and get the drivetrain from a 7 series BMW.
Just the opinions of one weird old fart.

If it has to be Ford. Just get a 5.0 HO out of a mustang. Take it all out complete. Wire harness and all. I think its a better choice as far as reliability and fuel consumption then anything on that list.

Anything on this list is more intresting than a 350 sbc!:

i was looking at a 500 caddy, but it got crushed already, and as for an FE and the other options, the junkyards around here really only have back until about the 1970's and only trucks that old, all the cars are 80's and up and running the 5.0, i have to look again at a marquis that just came in on its year, i cant remember if it was an 80-81 or a 78

the roller cam mustang 5.0 motors are nice for a starting point, and you can ditch the fuel injection, if its too much for ya, by swapping on a 4 barrel intake/carb if you use the distributor from the 85 mustang (it has the familiar ford electronics like almost all of the carbed fords yet has right gear on end for roller cam) they run great that way, and have drivability, plus i think as far as budget builds it might be the best bang for the buck...i personally would stay away from the 351m/400 as the aftermarket parts are big$$$$$$

What's the plan for the car anyhow? If it's a cruiser, use whats cheapest to build. If you wanna burn at the lights, find that 460. My guess is that Lincoln is about 800Lbs heavier than a Mustang. Get in a Mustang with four fat guys and see how fun it is.
