I couldn't make up my mind whether to coat or paint my headers. So I left them bare and was going to do something later. Well it's been almost two years and they are still plain steel.

When they started to get a rust film on them I wiped them down with paint thinner, 100% mineral spirits. I really didn't think much of it at the time, so I would just wipe them down every time rust would start to form. And after two years they look ok plain

Isn't that funny, must have something to do with the engine heat burning off the rust. Dan built some baffles for his rpu and the end plates are raw steel and they have been on the car for a couple of months and still look like the day he sanded them smooth. Maybe the engine heat removes the moisture from the steel or something.

I flat black-ed the pipes on my shovel head once and accidentally spilled some atf on the before it got fired up. So I wiped it off good and after I started it they took on a really nice satin grey that was tough as nails so after that I always wiped them down with atf after painting. BTW, those look great.

On any cast iron exhaust manifolds I spray them with copper coat gasket sealer, after it gets baked in, gives em a nice satin black look.

The pipes on my bike need painting...I am going to try the ATF trick. Thanks for the tip.

I never would have thought that. Headers of all things seem to rust no matter what you coat them with short of ceramic. I can't believe they still look like new.....cool!
