looks like the inside of my 1966 283 chevy small block l pulled out after 3OO,OOO miles. the cam cam out in 3 pieces, lifters were so dished they looked like miniature soup bowls and the timing chain was so loose it came off without removing the gears AND it still was able to start and move the car down the road.

who's car is that or ??

Later

I bought a "one-owner" '57 Dodge back in the early 70's. Pulled out the small block V8 (325) and took the valve covers off. Looked like the pictures above. Talked to the PO. He said: "yeah, I have used amalie oil in it all its life....(about 80+K mi.). I replaced it with a warmed over 383, and went on my merry way, using valvoline.

Looks like Quaker State to me. Like Skull, I pulled a SBC apart that came out of a one owner car, old lady owned, she wrecked it, and it looked like that. Funny thing was, she did have the oil changed every 6 months, but she always used Quaker State. Had to vat it to get all that junk out of it.

I have pulled off valve covers and had sludge the exact shape of the inside of the valve cover. I asked an engine builder once about heave parrafin/sludge buildup and he said it's generally 3 things, and a combination of them. Penzoil, too cold of thermostat and short drives where the engine never gets to run at operating temperature long enough.

Funny, I've been running Pennzoil for 30 years and I've never had an engine of mine look like that. But I do change mine, maybe not often enough, but it does get changed.

wish I would have took a picture of my 64 Plymouth when I got it . I bought a 64 for $200 , slant six , and this was my first car .. mowed a lot of grass for that car .. I changed my oil and put in 10-w-30 Valvoline ...it held about 3 quarts or so,, I thought that was normal , I didnt know .. thats about all that come out , and the stick said full .. about 50 miles later rod knocking :( Took oil pan down and it looked like it was still on there :D . so after about an hr of digging I found the crank,, and pump . so I changed the rod bearing , then decided to take valve cover off and it was the same way . just seeing the top of the valve and a small hole for the oil to go down threw ... after a while of digging and cleaning I put her back together and she run good ... but a mechanic told me it had a non-detergent oil it . (quaker state ) most likely . He said when i put the detergent oil in it broke the sludge up and clogged the oil pump .So that got the rod ..
