I'm posting this in hopes that those of you having troubles with your ratchet shifters can find a cheap easy fix. First I was going to show how I modified an old Mr. Gasket ratchet shifter I got at the junk yard for $10 into a cool long handle rat rod shifter. The shifter was really loose and was not shifting gears very well... sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. After studying it for a while I realized there were three main points where the shifter need to be tight and braced well to shift correctly. I'll talk more on this in the next post... here's my shifter. Let me also note that the longer shaft makes it way easier to shift these ratchet shifters.

I want to use an HVLP spray gun for a shifter knob and am thinking of either welding a hose extension so I can use the normal hose fittings on the gun or welding a bolt with sleeve, but when I was thinking of the stance of the gun I was thinking a siphon feed would work better so I can mount it to where the handle sticks out instead of connecting at the handle (if that makes sense).

Here are pics of where I reinforced the key points with rubber washers. I had to shave the rubber washers down some with my Dremel tool so they fit. The shifter was loose and not shifting right so a few cheap washers fixed the problem. The shifter is a very simple set up and easy to take apart. Just make sure that your gears are set up right and pulled tight when putting it back together. I feel like I need to explain more but it's a pretty simple fix. Let me add that you can't see the washers I added... hence the need to take the shifter apart.

The images below kind of explain what I'm trying to say.

thanks for the info! i like the idea of the long shifter, and being a bit of a bodyman, the paintgun idea seems cool to me-personally i would use the old siphon-type gun (maybe try to find an old one, i think it would add more)
