I just knew it was going to work this time [P

We are getting closer OI. I believe what is happening is that the pilot bearing adapter is just a bit too long. When we bolt the trans up to the adapter the nose on the trans main shaft goes in to the pilot bearing but the splines on the shaft are pushing against the pilot bearing rim putting pressure on the crank and pushing it out towards the front of the block. Causing a bind. I mean we are talking very small movement here but just enough to lock things up.
When we start to loosen the bolts that hold the trans to the adapter the engine will start to turn over again.
I believe that we have the pilot bearing fully seated so we will take some more off the end of the pilot bearing.
Won't be for a couple of days though.

All in all, keeping your humor about you shows the determination to get it figured out buddy.
Having some issues myself that at times I think the body is gonna give up before the fix gets made. Keep at it Torchie!!!

I understand now about the input shaft bottoming out on the bearing [P
Sometimes I get a little dense :p

Torchie, I know you're pretty methodical and careful on this stuff. Is there a possibility that the pilot bushing itself isn't seated all the way into the crank???

I doubt that you are dense OI.;) Sometimes it is hard to put this stuff into words.[S

It's possible and I have considered and checked that more than once smallfoot. The bearing adapter was extremely tight to install. Which according to Wilcap it should be. You thread a bolt into the hole in the end of the adapter then using a BFH you drive it in. There is also a lip on the inside of the Olds crank hole that acts like a stop for the original Olds bronze pilot bushing.
Based on the sound it made and the way that it felt going in.It felt like it hit something solid and it rang like a bell once it hit what I believed to be that lip.
Not really a scientific way but what can I say......:D WE are talking tight tolerances here. Not to mention mixing real old and real new parts.
Wilcap also said the if I had to pull the adapter and reinstall it to use loctite on it. So it has to be tight.
Things would be a lot easier if I wasn't in this dang chair as I am having to rely on my young bloods to do the heavy lifting. Even though they are car guys we are not always speaking the same language. Tuner vs Mechanical :eek: ;)
The stump is getting better and I am hoping to be back in the leg soon. So that will help.

Determined to make some progress today I rolled out to the shop and got back down on the floor. Here are the results......
Pic1. Left to my own devices with out all the background noise and opinions the trans is mounted to the engine and they both turn freely.[cl [cl [cl [cl [cl :D
Pilot bearing was fully seated. I took a little off the end of the trans main shaft as it was bottoming out in the adapter as well.

Pics 2-3. Since I seemed to be on a roll and was down there anyway I also mounted up the front shocks.:D
That's all for now. The plan is to install the engine one more time tomorrow.

The old style pilot bearing adapter has a hole that went all the way through as well as a collar on them. It was easier to see that they were seated correctly and the length of the main shaft snout was not an issue.
The pic below shows the old style bronze adapter inside of the engine/trans adapter ring.
The one that comes with the Wilcap adapter looks just like a Cylinder but with an end that has a threaded hole for the installation bolt to thread into.
On to the next challenge...

With the Trans/PP/Pilot bearing issues behind us we got the engine/trans back into the chassis this evening. Interesting with just one guy and me in the chair.:eek::)
The deep red engine looks great against the Blue/Black firewall color. Don't know what next week holds as I have quite a few Dr appts including my 6 month visit with the Cardiologist. That should be interesting.
Stump is still swollen so I can't get the Brand New leg on. Hopefully will have some answers for that as well.
