I think if it were me I would not mount it perfectly flat, but just a small angle to ensure no air is stuck in it. If it is to be mounted lower than the engine, make sure you have a way to bleed the system or air can get trapped and create a hot spot in the engine.
If this is your first build you might want to go ahead and spend a little money to make things easier. Your first project can be overwhelming. Sure you can do just about everything yourself but when you start to see how much time it will take you your often better of spending at least a little...
