Help with engine decode please

Can someone give me a link or tell me how I go about getting an engine decoded? I have two chevy engines I need to decode. I tried FTE but their decoder said they were not valid numbers, I wonder if theirs will only decode ford numbers.

You tried putting Chevy #'s into FTE's decoder?!?! What were you thinking! Hope their servers didn't shut down...

Do a Google search for "chevy motor decode" - all sorts of sites come up.

Thanks Gastrick. The trouble I am having is everything is based on the casting #s instead of the stamped block #s. I've been to a couple different sites. One says I have a '69-'79 350 car/truck/vette, another one says I have a '69 327 from a Z-28. I have two engines, If anyone can help here are the #'s ---- Both are casted as 3970010, One stamped block # is V1006TYX, the other one is V1005TWY. Anyone?????

The prefix portion of the ID code tells you the assembly plant code, and the engine's production date. The suffix portion tells you the original model year / engine / transmission / car combination when it went down the assembly line.

Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)
Another example: T0830CTY - (T = Tonawanda, 08 = August, 30 = 30th day, CTY = 1970 396 Camaro, 375 hp, 11.0:1, TH400)

I wish I had my book handy. the 3970010 is a car/truck/vette 4 bolt main I believe. Not sure though. Well maybe 99%
