Hello out there I need some help I just bought a engine the guy I bought it from says it is a 283 but the casting numbers I keep finding says it is a 327 here are the numbers any help would be great.
cast #3789817
date L-13-61 code #T0209C
head #3814480

Thanks
Todd

Todd, on the 327 engines look at the front of the block, on the right hand side there's a freeze plug, if you run your finger up and down between the freeze plug and the timing chain, there's a distinct mold relief you can feel (different level of surface).
Absolutely no 283's have this and absolutely all 327's no exception do have this.
Most 307's are nothing more than 327 blocks with a 3 7/8 bore and share this same ridge. You can bore a 307 that has this ridge to a 4" bore and put 327 pistons in them.
350's do not have this either.
Hope this helps
Your engine was built in November 13 1961 and could be a 327 just check what I showed you

Jim

Another thing you could check is the engine codes. (Assuming it's never been decked), there should be two sets of numbers stamped on the land just ahead of the pass side cylinder head.

Those numbers can nail it down to which vehicle, cid and horsepower, etc.
