I cant believe someone doesnt make/sell a cheaper headlight mount than what I have been able to find. So now I am looking for ideas. There must be some sort of bracket others have used. I may end up welding something ogether, but still I would like everyones ideas.

27 ford. I really like the highboy mounts that speedway sells, but for the price, I dont think its worth it.

I can't picture what you have in mind but here's what I did. I used the ends of an '80's Camaro front sway bar. I welded it onto the sides of the frame and it works great. The best thing it was free. It was off a wrecked car we parted out.

Keith those are exactly thekind of ideas I am searching for. Keep them coming guys. I am going to home depot tomorrow and look at their wooden fence handles. i know I can get them shiny and with the ends having the holes and mounting plate. i would have to bend one end then try to find a way to attach my lights to the other end. I may get a set and weld on a piece of round stock to the other end and drill for my light. I would have to paint them after but may be an option.

Back before we could run down to SoCal or any other place to get stuff like this, we made our own. One of the old hot rod tricks was to cut up a Model A or 32 Ford stock headlight bar and weld the ends back on so they mounted to the frame, instead of the fenders. That is what I did exactly on both my 23 and my 27.

I like the 32 better than the model a because it is arc'd upwards whereas the model a is straight. When viewed from the front the model a will appear to sag but the 32 looks ok. What you do is cut the two ends off, right after the round spots where the headlights go, and weld them back on so they fit onto your frame. The other benefit is that your headlights are supported very well. I've seen other types that the headlights shake going down the road, but mine stay perfectly still.

Here are mine:

On my 29 that type wouldn't clear, so I did buy a set from SoCal and they worked fine. But you are right, at something like $ 90 they are a little pricey.

The problem with mounts like that, and even the aluminum speedshop versions, is that the headlights shake like a leaf on every bump in the road. A buddy of mine had a T bucket with those aftermarket aluminum ones, and when he was following my T his lights looked like he was flipping the high beams up and down. It's hard to build good looking ones that are also strong.

I often make them out of 1/8 plate welded to the frame and integrate the shock mounts - I like 'em low, and this type of mount doesn't wiggle. I agree with Don, lots of guys make them from too thin of rod or not supported right and they can really wave around. Here's some of mine.

After reading this thread I went home on Monday and made these. Thought I would share. I was amazed at how easy they bend.

I know this is an old thread, but since it is back to life I might as well update what I did on mine. Originally, I was going to use the stainless steel SoCal mounts but the problem was that the headlight brackets and the shock mounts wanted to occupy the same spot on the front of the car. The solution was that we made shock mounts with a headlight mount built in so now one mount does both jobs.
