Unfortunately since i dont have any cool pictures of my truck because i just got it and. i have to replace the timing chain in it.. the guy took pictures of it while he was In the Marines in Camp Lejeune Marine base in North Carolina after he bought it. and put them on a flash drive. pretty neat. He said a High ranked marine owned it since new until he bought it in 04 or 05? he put some money into this truck before i got it.
it has
292 Y-Block rebuilt in 08.
3 speed on the column, soon to be on the floor any good kits out there? [S
Ram horn headers, 3 inch lake pipes done in 08
550 cfm 2 barrel Holley
9 inch rear end with 311 gears.
New tires with only 3,000 miles on them.
The guy has all the receipts for everything that has been done to the truck.
just good ole truck. it was his daily driver. but i got it sooo cheap. the guy had it on there for 1500.00 but luckily the timing chain broke. so i somehow talked him down to 450.00. so basically all i got too do is. fix the timing chain. fix the body up a little this is going to be a low budget deal. i'l probably get a 5gal. bucket of bondo. h:p and have some fun. I dont know if il go with a flat black like my dad did to his 66 Galaxie or go with a roll on Rustoleum black paint job. like i said this is on a tight budget. but this sure will be a fun truck to fix up. il post more as i go along stick with me here. [P

Also to add.

I got to talking to this guy who had a bunch of old cars. and i told him about my 62 Ford... and he told me he had something to show me. It was a 61 Ford F100 Unibody short bed. he said he will let me have it but i have to do some clean up work around his plot of land til the end of April :D i need to build muscle anyway right? haha heres some pics of it. Sadly they put a 350 Chevy in it. but it will come with a running 292 v8 and 4 speed. just thought i'd share this with ya guys. my luck has been very good lately...

When you do that timing chain on the Y-block, make sure you get the gears right. You don't line up the dots like on a SBC, there are a certain # of links between them.

I missed this thread - nice scores. Especially that Uni! A disc brake conversion is a good investment too if you ever drive in the city.

This is John Mummert's site - http://www.ford-y-block.com/assemblyerrors.htm Some good info for rebuilding.

Specifically:
"Timing gear installation. Some people try to align the timing marks on the gears toward each other as is common on newer engines. This is bound to happen more often now as the replacement timing chains no longer have the pins marked for correct alignment with the gears. The marks on the Y-Block timing gears aim toward the oil filter side with 12 pins between them."

and...
Timing cover installation. Check the length on the 5/16" diameter bolts for the timing cover. If bolts that are too long are installed they can contact the front cylinders damaging the block. Apply sealer to bolts that enter the water jacket. These are the 2 bolts on above and below the water passages. 4 total."

Looks like that motor might have been out of a car. Are you sure it's a 292 and not a 312? Fastest way to know is the 292 has a 3.3" stroke and the 312 has a 3.44" stroke.
 
Both solid lifters.

You pull a plug, stick a straw down the hole, and measure the travel.

Or, if you look at Mummert's site, it'll tell you the codes to look for. Frankly it's easier to measure the stroke.

The only reason I ask is because the F100 motors weren't painted blue and the old exhaust manifolds pictured were from a car. The ram horns were from a big truck.

I'd suggest you pull the valve covers off and make sure you're getting good oil flow to the rockers. Y-blocks would get poor oil circulation from clogged oil galleys.
 
Looks a little cruddy in there? I guess you can check oil flow the next time you adjust the valves. There should a good amount of oil flowing in the heads is all.

Oh yeah, it's gonna be painful to adjust your valves - the yblock is done hot while running, so you usually come away with a few burns from the manifolds. :(
