Looks a little cruddy in there? I guess you can check oil flow the next time you adjust the valves. There should a good amount of oil flowing in the heads is all.

Oh yeah, it's gonna be painful to adjust your valves - the yblock is done hot while running, so you usually come away with a few burns from the manifolds. :(

Yeah.. i think the guy had penzoil put in there in the three years he's had it :(

Nice scores on those trucks. [cl
It would be interesting to know how the seller determined the timing chain is broken [S. If that's really the case, and it happened while the engine was going at some high RPM, you may have some bent valves too.... Judging by the crud under the valve cover, it wasn't treated well - I'd be inclined to pop the heads off and clean them up at least. Then you can also address the Y-block rocker oiling issue mentioned. Oil is fed up to the heads in a small passage that has a jog in it at the head/block mating surface, and this is where the guk builds up, restricting flow, then the rest of the passages really start to build up goo. Run a pipe cleaner thru the passage in the head and the tube that feeds the rocker shaft.
Love them Y-blocks, torquey engines that have their own unique sound.

He actually didnt know what happened. we found out it was the timing chain would marvel mystery oil help clean them up?

First make sure there is a problem before you try to fix it. Deal with the timing chain issue, then worry about oiling.

To be sure the timing chain is bad, pull off a valve cover and turn the motor over by hand. If none of the valves are moving, remove the timing cover and see what's that shows. When you pull the valve cover, check the pushrods too.
