I started building my new project last week. It has taken me a couple of weeks to get all the pieces for my build. The cab and fenders used to be a local fire truck. The frame is out of a 87 Chevrolet 3/4 surburban, axle is out of a 80 model Chevy dually and the big block motor came out of a 82 Cadillac hearse. I haven't decided if I will make it back into a shortened and lowered firetruck version or put a shortened bed on it. I also plan to put 35 inch rough tread tires on the rear.More pics later

i like your plan for a rat rod fire truck.... Glad to see someone else scrap a hearse. Great source for a cheap low milage big block :D

I agree! Good idea. I like the idea of taking old service vehicles and turning them into rat rodz. I would like to see an old ambulance or taxi in the rat form.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.I've about finished with the chassis.Hopefully I'll have the cab on the frame this weekend. Then, I'll mockup the sides and we can see what the different versions look like. I've found four 36 x12.50 goodyear tires off a military Hummer to put on the rear.More later...

I have a good relationship with a local salvage yard. It is where I get my excerise in walking and searching for parts. If I can't find what I need they will usually call me when it comes in the yard. Its like the junk gods always come thru for me.

Places like that are non exsitent here in MI...

You can go to the pick a part yard but it's all late model stuff...no really walk thru bone yards anywhere I can find....:(

Here's the progress up to now.The cab is bolted down, motor, tranny, driveshaft, and exhaust installed.I finally replaced the windshield tonite. I'm slowly creeping up on going for a drive.

Here's some pictures of my progress so far this week. All I need is to put the gas tank back in and I can go for a drive. The fenders are braced and ready to weld in the extensions.I believe I need to take some of the springs out of the rear.I took three out of the last truck I did and it lowered it 1.5 inches.
