over lap welding

By this I'm talking about when you chop a roof and go to weld in the piece for the space where the gap is from widening it, does it have to be an exact cut for width or can you make it wider by an inch or two when you weld it to the other roof sections? Hope this makes sense from trying to explain it, lol.

dont over lap of flange the panels, it will promote rust and just looks bad from the top side, especially if you dont plan on filling it. butt welds on sheet metal

Eastwood to the rescue

I found this hand tool by Eastwood about 20 yrs ago while doing my first chop top.
I think they make them a power version now but the hand job(*?) works just fine.
I tried to get the pic. to show whats happening?
