A friend would like me to paint some flames on his charger. It is currently base/clear coat. I was planning on wet sanding the doghouse with 400 grit to scuff the current clear coat. Is this paper too coarse? I want to make sure the next paint (for the flames) will stick well. I will tape off the flames and then I plan on wet sanding with finer paper, (2000 grit) to blend any edges and re-clearing. Any good paint guys got any suggestions?

Thanks,

when preping your clear for top coat nothing more abrasive than 800, other wise you will see scratches through your clear. it doesnt take much to get your mechanical adhesion so dont get to carried away or you will break through your clear. and make sure your using fine line tape to mask out your flames, masking tape will allow your base coat to bleed under and you will land up with a mess, good luck
