Racing engine...

I've repleced the aftermarket carb (Rochester Monojet) that was on my 48 Dodge Town Sedan when I bought it, with a Ball & Carter 1bbl.

Good news: It starts right up (no spraying starting fluid in the carb like before)

Bad news: It races instantly to a really high rpm

I've adjusted the idle screw to run as lean as possible, but I don't have the linkage running to the carb yet. Could this be the cause of my racing engine? Or is there another adjustment on the carb that I don't know about?

maybe the throttle could be stuck open.

Sounds like a vacuum leak! Check all of your vac ports and the base gasket for leaks!

Like Gussett said, it may be a vacuum leak or the the throttle is not returned all the way.

Why would you start it with no throttle linkage? Did you at least put a spring to hold the carb shut?

I'm going to get the linkage set up, and apparently these carbs need a pretty strong return spring to avoid this very problem.
