im new to rat rodding, want to buid some sort of pickup i'd like to know the rules e.g. what's the latest year you can do etc....

I think the cool thing about ratrodding is that there should be no rules. Build what you want, the way you want at least until the government thinks its unsafe or or polutes or something and they'll either tax it or ban it.;)

It is one of the motorsports that is really not divided up into rules and catagories. I like the older, 20's 30's and 40's cars and trucks, but I have seen 50's and 60's that I like too. It all depends on how it is done. There are a few guys working on 70's and 80's rigs too. It is all a matter of taste. What do you like?

You're not alone man! i was suddenly thinking the same thing when i was thinking of using a 75 f100 cab on my project.

then i saw a post with someone thinking of doing the same on the site that starts with a "k" that i'm trying not to compare to this one, but i fear its too late....:(:(:( (please dont kick me anywhere below the belt, or in the face!!!)

Personally I don't care for anything that dates to any later than say the mid 60's at the very latest. Even at that only a select few qualify as suitable candidates in my opinion. I'm not condemning anybody either I'm just stating my own taste in rat rods. The big heavy 60's cruisers like Cadillacs and most pickups all with the right amount of wear and patina are at the limit of my interest. These days, everybody has their own definition of a rat rod. I'm quite sure there are plenty of guys on here that would say anything older than the late 30's doesn't qualify in their opinion. I have my opinion and everyone else has theirs. Most importantly, we should all just be glad we have the freedom to express our individual tastes and opinions and try not to be critical of others with different ideas with one exception! SAFETY! If something is truly unsafe then hell yes, we should all say something critical!!

if you want a complete list of rules for Rat Rodding, go the the HAMB site and ask some of the more senior contributors, i'm sure they'd take the time to set you straight..........;)

NO NO!! i'm joking! do not ask this question on the HAMB.......:eek:

Well said, Bonehead.

Build it first, then decide what you want to call it! Generally muscle car era cars don't come off as rats. What is the term for the later model equivalent of a rat? A beater rod? If you've seen the movie "Smokin' Aces", whatever that car was, was a cool beater, but not a rat - IMHO. Who cares, it's the attitude, not year.

Still welcome here as far as I'm concerned. There are a few guys on here that have vehicles that are WAY to nice to be considered rats, but I would never suggest they leave. Again it's attitude.

Like someone else said: ratrods are like porn, I can't define it, but I know it when I see it.

rat rod rules

Dang 59imp is going to get new guy rayk hurt, dont you know the HAMB mafia will come get him in his sleep, I dont know about the rest of you, but I like all my bones in 1 piece, ok enough about that, I agree with everone else here, build what you want, how you want it, money will most likley be the deciding factor, I wish I had the money to buy a cherry 32 coupe, but not in my future right now, but please just make it safe, lots of great cool people here and we will all try to help you out on any questions you have about your build, frame, suspension, brakes, welding, the list go's on and on, there is only 1 RULE you have to take lots of pictures and post them so we can all keep up with your build.

Oooh, that's just mean! (I was gonna tell him the same thing, but you beat me to it...hehehe!)
The only way you can mention the word "rat" over there and live to tell about it is if you're a girl...good thing, for me, I am :D

Seriously though, there are no rules just personal preferences. Some jackass might not like what you build, but who cares as long as you do.
As everyone else has said, be safe and welcome!

Rules ???? We don't need no stinkin' rules ! Seriously, only 2 rules as I see it. Build it to be safe & build what YOU like. btw; Welcome to RRR, rayk. You've found the best rodding site there is, bar none.

Whenever I hear the word "rules" I curl up into the fetal position from flashbacks of my racing years. The rules were black and white, but we raced in the gray. So why have rules if we're just going to do everything possible to break them anyway? There are a lot of other former and/or present racers on here as well who probably feel the same way I do.

The appeal of rats is that anything goes. There is no sanctioning body (not even RRR members) who are going to criticize or disqualify anyone for what they build and drive. Like Sam Fear said, there may be a lot of other rides on here that are not textbook (not there is such a thing!) rats, but we all dig 'em and respect them for what they are. After all, this site is based on our love of rats, but deeper within is just a common love of rods from days gone by.

Man, you're trying to get the new kid killed already, and he's only been here 4 days!!! haha

He was joking. Whatever you do, don't mention the "R" word on the Hamb. Unless you brought marshmallows and a stick!
