Hey guys,

I've had a couple stray dogs running around the neighborhood for the last couple days. Today they ran straight at my wife and I as we brought the groceries in and I had to act like a total physcho to stop them from going after us. Then they started messing with my 80 year old neighbors dog through their fence so I chased them off with a wooden dowel i had handy. There not afraid of me though unless I'm swinging something. They came back shortly after as well when we left to go back to work. Any suggestions? I don't want my wife or "kid" to get bit when i'm not around. I called animal control and they said we'll send someone out when we can. Real helpful huh? I don't own a gun and I don't think shooting in town would go over very well where I live anyways, they have collars but I don't think they are friendly enough to get close. What would you do? Call the cops and say I have a gun and i'm going to shoot these dogs? I guess at least that way someone will come out :p.

Not sure what to tell ya Joe. Where I live, if you call the cops and tell them stray dogs are attacking people in your neighborhood, chances they will respond and if the dogs are aggressive toward them, they will deal with them if they can't get animal control out there.

Are you sure that the dogs don't belong to someone in your neighborhood who is letting them run free? Maybe you could ask around and find out, then report or confront them if that's the case.

In any case, I would do what ever I need to in order to protect my family. I'm a friend of animals, but not when I, or my family is under attack.

i know what you mean gas, if animal control dosn't come out tonight and they are still around I'm going to run them around with my dowel and see where they go. They might belong to somebody on vacation and try to run back home if i'm harassing them. I'll also see how agressive they actually are. At this point I was more suprised then anything at how they just ran right up to us, no hesitation and they weren't wagging their tails. It kinda freaked me out. Most strays or even collared and tagged dogs around here won't even approach us.

I just watched part of a TV show, when good pets go bad. Dogs can mess you up for sure, even one animal control officer was very badly attacked when some idiotic lady sicked her pit bull on her. Be careful because you never know what they will do or what diseases they might have if they bite you.

I hate people who are so irresponsible as to let their pets run loose. My GF and I would take long walks at night and take her sheetsu (I had to spell it that way because Trippers zapper won't let the correct spelling come up. :D:D) Our dog was always on a leash, but I had to scare off lots of loose dogs, and sometimes their owners would say "Oh, he doesn't bite, don't worry." I would inform them that doesn't matter, there is a leash or fence law and they are in violation of it.

The BB gun thing works miracles. Been there, done that. Dogs learn REAL quick when you plunk em.

Pepper spray works wonders. There was a German Sheppard that was nuts, it was growling to itself, kinda like a crazy person talking to himself. I saw this old lady with groceries walking down the street. Sure enough, the dog spotted her and began to approach. I thought, "Oh shoot, what do I do? Get involved or walk away?".

I got between her and the dog. Facing the dog, I told the old lady to back away, not run. So what does she do? She turns and shuffles away. The dog snarls and begins the attack. The dog got within 20 feet of me and I sprayed him with pepper spray, right in the muzzle. The dog stopped in its tracks, heading for the nearest lawn, opposite from me, buried its snot in the lawn and ran around in circles.

Never saw that dog again. Works like a charm.

see if he will play fetch with you.............

A BB gun is only good at close range.. say 1/2 of an inch. I find a .223 for up to about 100 yards then I switch over to the .300 Win Mag for up to about 900 yrds. Hope this helps, and feel free to ask my advise anytime.

I like the paint ball and pepper spray, neither will hurt the dog but he will know better afterwards. Besides he will look pretty funny if he was shot with all different colors of paint balls. Even if he licks it off it will not hurt him b/c most are made of fishoil. LOL

I called animal control and they said we'll send someone out when we can.

I'd write a little note to the city attorney saying you called in this report & this is what you were told... when these dogs finally hurt someone it's not gonna look good & the city's gonna be liable!!!

I don't know about your area, but county services are pretty bad. If you have the ASPCA in your area, they are a lot more responsive. The will track down the owner and take appropriate action. They are actual police officers.

i haven't seen them since yesterday so hopefully they have been picked up. Or their owners came home form vacation or something .

well, i had the same experience once. called the cops, they said they didn't have anyone available, i called back about 30 min later and told them i just shot a mad dog on my yard, they were there in about 2 min. they asked me why i said i had shot the dog, since i hadn't and i said, "you told me no one was available either". they threatened me with the penal code for about an hour then just went a way with the dog.
