    VW Bug Pickup

welcome. I'm pretty new here to. I've been working on something similar, the cab idea at least, for several years now. I have a few tricks and tips on making the cab come together if you need or want them. what are your intentions for the frame and engine placement? are you keeping the mcpherson...

    1945 GMC Prohibition Express

I really like the side pipes. I'll do the same on mine except have them turn out just before the rear tire. and don't second guess the dual tires for the rear. i think it's an awesome idea, but I'm biased. the orange engine block clashes with the style of the truck more than the duals would...

I am leaving it dually. I want it to be a usable workhorse and I really like the look. as for the grille. I've seen grille shells done in so many ways and have a good idea for what I want to do. nothing concrete, but I want the grille to look mean, and to do that the 34 ford coupe grille with a...

    Peterbilt 359

this is one of the cooler rats i've seen. it would be on heck of a toy hauler if you had a gooseneck low boy and still had a 5th wheel. a rat to haul a rat or race car. do you usually drive it in high range when cruising around or just skip gears? awesome truck, can't wait to see what comes next.

    volksrod progress and pics

also these help a ton. they have a pretty strong grip, and keep your panels aligned with a good gap for welding. cheap to. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200381757_200381757

    volksrod progress and pics

here is the only pic I can find of mine for the moment. I had two roofs. makes it way easier to fill in the gaps in the edges. then you cut out the center section of the roof you chopped and lay in the donor roof skin. keeps the roof from having a big cross in the middle of it. and it's less...

I did quite a bit of research before I decided how to make the body lines go all the way around. turns out bug door skins and 54 chevy truck cab corners do the trick. the rest was just a lot of eyeball, measuring tape and patience. I will fully agree with you though. starting with a full cab...

thanks jmlcolorado and BIGGBREKFAST. I did get some garage time in today. the frame is on hold until I order more metal, so I'b moving back over to the cab. a lot of tedious welding. almost finished piecing together the back of the cab. just one more corner then on to the doors and front. slowly...

    sloppy jaloppy

that's the truth. i picked up a whole unfinished hackjob baja bug for a cool $300 that had some parts on it worth some money. then I sold off what I could, scrapped what I didn't need and came out on top. so they are out there. I plan to do just that. I just need to purchase the metal. going...

    sloppy jaloppy

easy. . . . . nobody here is doing it the easier way. everybody on this forum is building a car. there isn't anything easy about that. some of us just pick our battles differently. I like vw's and I wanted a truck, a duallie truck, with a blown small block. so I'm building just that. a dualie vw...

    sloppy jaloppy

thanks, I only wish I had more time on my hands. between the wife, 1 year old, and 2 jobs time for the rat is in short supply. I have most saturdays to work as an agreement with the wife. she calls it my "Man Day." she just keeps the cold beer and ice water coming. . . . and meals. she's pretty...

I have a 29 ford front axle with all the trimmings minus brakes. The only reasons im keeping this front axle is the bolt pattern and the massive front brakes.

    sloppy jaloppy

i'm under no delusion that the welds will hold on their own. there will be a fair bit of bracing to come. I plan to weld a 3/8" plate to the bottom of the axle in a triangle so the tallest part, about 2 inches, is in the center and it tapers off at each end. then I'll bolt, to the front and rear...

    anything new? diggin' the build.

    sloppy jaloppy

thanks all. i've been building this rat for some time. progress is slow but steady. a lot of time is spent with a measuring tape in hand. i plan for this to be a functional rat. something i can pull a substantial trailer with. so it may look overbuilt, but that's by design. if you see weaknesses...
