Looking at possibly purchasing a 1962 mercury meteor as a daily driver and was looking to get a bit more info on the 221. What kind of gas mileage can I expect out of a stock 221 that is paired up with a 3spd trans?

Should be pretty decent. I had a GF at one time who had a similar Comet. She would run for a few weeks on a tank of gas.

For some strange reason, Ford small blocks are not the most fuel efficient motors out there. The sbc motors I have had were better in that regard. Maybe just the way they are engineered or something. But a little 221 with a stick shift should be good, I would think.

It the smallest small block that ford made. It should be good on gas.

The motor was rated at 145 hp. It has small valve and runners in the heads. Because of the small bore 3.50 inches you are limited on what heads you can use. The larger valve heads the valves will hit the cylinder walls.

As for performance you would be limited to cams and intake.

In a light car with a 3 speed that little motor can be a lot of fun.
