Best way to insert the lights?

Cool truck! The chop is just right and I too like that you are keeping the fenders [cl[cl I've always liked how fat the fenders are on those old Dodges but never particularly liked the way the headlights are perched out there on the fenders. Also when I look at the grille in these trucks I tend to see only that awesome center section [dr If It were mine I'd fill the side grilles to make the fenders look even fatter and then mold some headlights in like this ...

....but that's just me :D

Again, cool project and I guess you did do a bit of work on that Chevy  Very nice!

ok, I took the Fargo for a drive yesterday and mounted the lights to check out the profile, and they don't look the best, kind of frogish looking. so I think I am going to go with inserting them into the mid fender as above, but I need some advice, do I use the existing light bucket and just insert that[S Or is ther another better way to get them in there? Anyone have a good link to a post with a similar installation?

latest pictures

Attached are the most up to date pictures, included a picture of the dash insert, started with stainless and had to many issue drilling large holes in it, gave up on that and went with wood painted silver.

Got my battery remote mounted under the rear box area to get more room in the engine area, and a completed installation of the radiator and overflow tank.

The rest are the front side and back view and view from the drivers seat.

progress

i spend the day wet sanding the cab and then gave it another shot of primer in a few spots, also got the running boards patched up and got most of the worst dents out of them. Just sprayed them with boxliner coating, i am hoping it will give a nice non-shiny surface and hold up to muddy shoes and sand. I attached a picture of the finished running board below. Tomorrow i hopefully will have flat black on the cab and box tomorrow!!! the rear fenders still need a bit of work:( so it will be another day of body work on them at least before they are black.

I was also thinking of shooting my door inner liners which i made out of 1/4 hardboard (pic attached) with boxliner as well. Because i didn't know such a thing as rat rods existed when i started this project (i live a sheltered life) i was planning to fully finish the interior when i made these, but i think they would look good in flat black boxliner, and it will be much quicker and less frustrating than trying my hand at finishing them with vinyl or carpet.

yipeee paint is on the cab!

my wife had to work tonight so i was able to get a bit of "quality time" with the fargo. I did a final wipe down and finished masking and shot some flat black on her. It amazes me every time i paint something how many flaws there are in my body work that i didnt see in primer! the best part of flat black is that hey disapear when the thiner evaporates!!!! Also i found it much easier to shoot and i am sure it will be more forgiving with all the dust and bugs floating around the shop.

anyways i am stoked at how it looks. Trying to get it ready for a car show on Canada day, July 1st (canadian version of the 4rth of july)

here are some pics

one more shot

Pulled off the masking tape and paper, looks good. Thanks for the compliments reverend, slot mags are my favorite also, used to work at an auto wrecker in high school so I have a nice collection (We crushed a lot of 1970-1981 camaros some had decent mags which I snagged, hated those Multiple-straight spoke ones as attached-- sent them to the smelter)

smelter mags below.

done bondo...finally

i got all the body filler work done on the rear fenders and just shot them with a coat of high-build primer. Ill put another good coat on in 5 minutes or so and hopefully when i wet sand in the morning i can get out all the major sanding marks and then hit them with flat black tomorrow afternoon.

I also got my speedometer working and got one running board mounted today, need bolts for the other side, and got all my new polyurethane body mounts put in where i previously had 2X4s, i am hoping these wont sqeak quite so much.

This afternoon go get some bolts and more sandpaper and then i am going to put the bed liner on the plywood which is my truck bed and on the sided of the box. This truck will get used as a driver so i want something durable in the box because it will be carrying stuff around......and accelerating it quickly so i need something non-skid.

some pics of the primed fenders below, you can see the 40 chevy convertable in the background. Ok time for another shot of primer, cant wait to post the whole truck in flat black!!!!!

Exactly why I like dirty rats - no finish work. Hate it. Yours is going to look real good though. Keep at it! [P

bedliner in

Thanks SF and everyone else for the positive feedback, keeps me moving forward. I got the bedliner put in tonight and also a couple of swing arms to keep the hood propped up, they bolt on the center braces.

last paint is on

i got the fenders sanded this morning and shot flat black on them and the tail gate. Box liner dried nicely, i still have a half can left so i am going to add another layer. The fender in the picture looks glossy, it takes about 6 hours to dry and turn flat, and i just finished painting it 5 minutes ago.

Insurance

Got my insurance today and booked the inspection for certification and registration on Wednesday. Looks like I must have bumpers on it to pass, so thatbis my project fornthis afternoon, probably won't be the smoothest looking mounts ever, most likely they will fall off 10 min aftr the plates are on. Also putting the fenders on so I'll snap a picture when I get that done. At least now I can drive it legally.... For at least 14 days or more if I pass inpection!

first legal drive

got the fenders put on and got insurance and registration good for 14 days to get my inspection. i took a few pictures of the completed truck, minus inspection bumpers which will go on tonight.

got the bumpers on

i made up some mounts out of square tube and some other assorted bits that were in my bandsaw pieces bucket. The fenders are for a volkswagon beatle i think? I got them at a swap meet about ten years ago for $20.00, figured they would work good for something.

for a random set of bumpers and a two hour mounting job they actually don't look to bad, not very rat rod though, a bit to shiny.....any votes, leave em on or take em off after inspection?

There isn't much left to do before inspection, tidy up some wiring with tie straps, make sure the brake fluid is full and that should be about it.
