So, started to look into the guts of this 1979 Caddy 425 and ran across this (see pics) when I was removing the heads. Both heads have holes punched out in the area where the pushrods go through to the valve springs. Some areas punched out in large holes. This was done to both heads. I'm thinking this was perhaps a poor mans version of added oil flow???? Anyone seen anything like this before???

I don't know anything about 425 Caddy engines but if it was mine I'd find another head to compare your heads against. See if it is normal.

Wow, when you said punched out, you meant it. Looks like it was done with a ballpein hammer... Not sure if I'd trust those heads on cracks in bad places.

Well I got this 425 because it was attached to the transmission that I needed for my Caddy 472 engine. But I thought I would tear it apart to see what condition it was in, thinking perhaps to use it on my build. However, with those heads and other items including pistons not in the correct cylinders makes me think there was not too much quality control on the 425. So it is back to my original plan of using the 472 which I already have torn down and the heads are not punched out.

Sounds like maybe someone without much experience "rebuilt" the 425, at some point.

Had a classmate "rebuild" a motor in shop class years ago. He was adding all the "speed" secretes his buddies were telling him about in the process. He couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start when he got done. The shop teacher, me, and another more experienced student tore the motor down again, we al least were able to make it run pretty well, given what the classmate had done to it.
